Considering Adoption

See If It’s Right for You

Pregnancy can be unexpected and even unwanted. The timing is wrong, you don’t have the resources, or you simply don’t feel ready to be a mother. Your options seem limited. You even may feel like you have no choice. Either be a mother, which seems impossible, or have an abortion.

But have you considered adoption?

A baby might not be your dream right now. But you could help that dream come true for someone else. But will they take good care of my baby? Will I worry about my baby all the time? Asking these questions is good. It means you have the heart of a mother. You care about your baby and what is best for him or her. You want to give your baby a chance at a good life.

So what does adoption look like? There are three options.

Open Adoption

An open adoption means you choose the adoptive parents, and you can be a part of your child’s life. You meet the adoptive parents and have contact with them before, during, and after the adoption. You can make a plan with them and stay in touch with your child through letters, phone calls, or even face-to-face visits. The amount of contact varies greatly. It depends on what works best for you, the adoptive parents, and your child.

Semi-Open Adoption

In a semi-open adoption, you still choose the adoptive parents, but you do not have direct contact with the parents or your child. Everything takes place through an adoption agency or attorney. You often can communicate via phone calls, letters and other means, but identifying information is not shared.

Closed Adoption

With a closed adoption, you have no contact at all with the adoptive parents. If you are looking for a sense of closure or have concern for your privacy, this could be a good option for you.
